Studying for 1Z0-460: Oracle Linux 6 Implementation Essentials

The 1Z0-460: Oracle Linux 6 Implementation Essentials exam covers basic installation and configuration tasks of an OL6 system. Passing the exam will earn candidates the Oracle Linux 6 Certified Implementation Specialist certification. This test is largely geared toward employees of companies that are Oracle Partners. However, anyone can take the exam and earn the certification. 1Z0-460 shares a number of topics with the OCA-level exam 1Z0-100: Oracle Linux 5 and 6 System Administration. The OCA exam covers a significant number of subjects beyond those covered by the implementation essentials test.
The 1Z0-460 exam is meant to ensure that individuals understand the differences between Oracle Linux and other Linux distributions and that they are able to perform installation and initial configuration tasks. Oracle's Linux distribution is starting to be used on an increasing number of servers that host Oracle databases, They have modified the Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution to improve its suitability as a database platform. Becoming familiar with Oracle's most recent distribution of Linux 6 has the potential to enhance the careers of Linux system administrators that work with Oracle database or with database administrators that also perform system administration tasks. When preparing for any Oracle certification exam, your first step should be to visit the Oracle Education website. There is a list of topics available for every Oracle certification exam. The list will provide you with a clear set of goals that should guide your preparation. Oracle exams will never contain any question about topics outside those on the list. The Oracle Linux 6 Implementation Essentials exam will have seventy-one multiple-choice or multiple-answer questions and you will have 120 minutes to complete it.

The passing score is sixty-two percent. There is no partial credit for the multiple-answer questions -- every question is either right or wrong. Any questions on the exam that are left blank will count as incorrect. You should provide an answer to every question, even if you simply pick one at random, because otherwise it is certain the question will count against your score. If you are already familiar with installing Linux and performing basic system administration tasks, much of the material in this exam will be a review for you, This is true even if you have not worked specifically with Oracle Linux, The vast majority of commands covered behave identically from one distribution to the next, If you have worked with Red Hat Enterprise Linux or with Fedora, Oracle Linux is nearly identical, Only about twenty percent of the exam is on topics that are specific to Oracle Linux for one reason or another. The Oracle manuals are always a good source for candidates who are studying for Oracle certification tests. The documentation is very good and they can all be freely downloaded.
The information in the manuals is definitive. Oracle University develops their tests from them, so the answers on the exam will always match what the manuals indicate. The following titles provide the majority of the information you will need for 1Z0-460: Oracle Linux 6 Installation Guide Oracle Linux 6 Administrator's Guide Oracle Linux 6 Security Guide Oracle Linux Ksplice User's Guide The 1Z0-460 exam covers a fairly large number of topics -- seventy-nine in all. Because this is an 'essentials' exam, you might expect the questions to be fairly broad and generic -- asking about the purpose of a given command, for example. That is not the case. You will be expected to be quite familiar with commands and be able to provide the options that will perform specific functions. You might also be given a goal and have to answer which Linux utility would best be able to meet that goal. This exam concentrates on a relatively narrow set of Linux commands and functionality.
However, you need to understand the aspects of Linux that it does cover to a fair degree of detail. Prior to scheduling your exam, you should have spent a significant amount of time working with Oracle Linux 6. I highly recommend that you get Oracle's VM Virtualbox software (freely downloadable) and use it to create a virtual machine that you can install the operating system on. Having a Linux system handy to try out commands, investigate filesystems, and view configuration files while you are studying for the exam will help to make what you are studying more real.
